Exit Speech by outgoing Chairman MJ Mtetwa:
“In 2024, we recorded several key achievements that speak to the resilience and commitment of our network. Among the highlights was the successful hosting of the 7th SANOP Regional Board Meeting, which not only positioned Eswatini as a hub for regional collaboration, but also strengthened our engagement with partners across Southern Africa. At the national level, we invested in building the leadership capacity of our local chapter board through orientation on the Mandela Rules, reinforcing our governance and alignment with international standards of human rights in prison settings.

Our peer education initiatives continued to make an impact, engaging both inmates and ex-inmates in conversations around health, rehabilitation, and reintegration. These engagements were further strengthened through community health support systems led by ex-inmate peer educators, who continue to bridge the gap between correctional facilities and the wider community. Notably, in 2024, SANOP Eswatini also reached out to vulnerable groups through the donation of dignity packs to the Vulamasango Juvenile Centre, ensuring that young people in custody are not forgotten.

These achievements were made possible through collaboration. With very limited resources, it was the strength of our partnerships and networks that enabled us to deliver meaningful interventions and reach those most in need. This spirit of solidarity and cooperation has been the cornerstone of our progress, and it will remain central as we chart the way forward.

As we look beyond 2024, SANOP Eswatini is committed to deepening partnerships and embracing innovation in supporting prison work. Together with our allies, we will continue striving for a future where the rights, dignity, and well-being of inmates and ex-inmates are safeguarded, and where communities stand as pillars of support for successful reintegration.

On behalf of SANOP Eswatini, I extend heartfelt appreciation to all our partners, funders, and stakeholders for walking this journey with us. The work ahead is vast, but with unity and commitment, we are confident that we will achieve even greater impact.”-Siyabonga
